Is Hyperfibre Worth It for Me?

Is Hyperfibre Worth It for Me?
Thursday, 19 September 2024

Fibre is the most common and widespread form of broadband in New Zealand. The fibre network is made up of fibre optic cables, which are comprised of hundreds of tiny glass strands. These cables use light to transmit data to and from your devices. The fibre broadband network has by and large replaced the first generation of broadband network in New Zealand, which was the copper network. Fibre is super speedy – a lot faster than copper and has bigger and better capacity than its predecessor. Depending on which fibre speed you are on, you can have multiple devices connected to the internet at the same time, without anyone experiencing buffering or interruptions.

Most households will find that regular fibre works just perfectly for them. For households of two, who only use the internet for social media, emails, and basic video streaming, you’ll be comfortable with 50/ 100 Mbps. However, larger households with lots of devices, and particularly those with gamers, may prefer fibre 300 or even fibre 900.

Not everyone will need hyperfibre as it is generally pricier than other fibre options, and it is only worth considering if the following points apply to you:

1. Have Lots of Gamers

If you are a larger household made up of lots of gamers, you may want to consider hyperfibre. Hyperfibre means that lots of gamers can be playing at the same time, without having to worry about buffering or interruptions.

2. Want to Connect Multiple Wired Devices

If you have multiple wired devices that you’d like to connect, such as PlayStation or Xbox, you may be a great candidate for hyperfibre.

3. Want 4K Streaming and Gaming

If you have a household of gamers, and have people who want to stream 4K video games and movies, hyperfibre may be a great solution to avoid buffering and lagging.

The Verdict

Hyperfibre is an incredible newer version of fibre, and it has ultra-fast speeds and higher bandwidth. However, regular fibre is still super speedy, and hyperfibre is not for everyone, especially since it comes at a higher price point. It’s important to choose the right fibre speed for your needs. You don’t want to choose a plan that is too slow and experience buffering or lagging. On the other hand, you don’t want to choose a plan that delivers you more speed than you need, and charges you more for it. Consider your household internet activities and needs, and choose a speed that matches. Broadband Compare makes it easy and quick to compare different fibre plans, so you can choose the right speed, and get the right price for your needs.
