Farmside has been providing telecommunications services to rural New Zealand for over 20 years. 95% of our customer base are rural, whether they be farm owners, rural retirees, sharemilkers, life-stylers, or farm workers. These customer “personas” all have different connectivity needs and we have adapted our products and services over the past year to meet these differing requirements.

Here at Farmside we recognise the rural life is the good life, our customers choose to live rurally because they love the land, love the life. Most work seven days a week, out in the elements and at times, not much of a financial reward. But they wouldn’t have it any other way. We provide connectivity solutions that help make that good life, great. Whether it be on-farm solutions or for individuals and family, Farmside has a range of options to suit all.

We’ve realised there is a gap in market for a provider who can educate and provide our customers the huge benefits that can be achieved by utilising technology in their businesses and lives. We’re moving from being a rural telco to progressive connectivity provider that’s in business to make the good life great for our customers. In the last year we doubled our data caps and dropped our prices substantially, for both normal plan data and boosters. We’ve introduced a multi-plan option where additional broadband connections have a $20 monthly discount applied. We have competitive mobile plans that also include monthly discounts when paired with a broadband connection. A rural 5G product is coming to market that will mitigate the 4G congestion we see in some areas. Farmside is a well-established brand in rural and provincial New Zealand.

We have experienced very poor internet connection since January 2023, and had no internet connection over 48 hours recently.
We have found out that our neighbours’ internet works well. So we would like to switch to another provider. But the Farmside would let us go unless paying a disconnection fee, as our contract is due 21 September 2023. The manager of the Farmside talked to me unfriendly on the phone on 3 July 2023.

With average download speeds of 0.2 Mbps it was a no brainer to find a new provider who provides consistent speeds in excess of 80 Mbps for less than I was paying Farmside . The problem is that Farmside keep signing up customers despite knowing that the towers are congested . If you ring the call centre expect to be waiting a long time and they usually take at least 2 days to respond to emails .

For $1200 a year I expected a service that reliably connected to the internet when I required it .

Very helpful staff. My issue is with inconsistent speed. This has been long term. Vodafone recommend having a technician check the aerial orientation and equipment. Farmside not prepared to do that. Advised to go elsewhere.
Pros
Good staff.
Cons
Customers not important.

We joined Farmside after Vodafone encouraged us to move over to them with the promise of a cheaper deal (since Vodafone is trying to send all rural customers to Farmside, as its rural arm). We'd already been with Vodafone for some time and were no longer on a fixed-term contract but agreed to a new contract with Farmside. It was brilliant right up until the point we sold our property and had to break our contract early. At that point, they refused to continue our account suspension past the 3 months stage (you try buying a rural property within 3 months in this market!) and charged us $450 break fee, despite the fact that all we'd had from them was a modem and they were incurring no other costs. This was in very poor faith given that it's effectively part of Vodafone and the same company we had been with for several years. Our cheap deal turned out to be a very expensive one indeed. ...read more
