Signing consent form to install fibre broadband
Monday, 8 April 2019

Do I need consent to get fibre installed?

To connect properties like apartments or units, or those that share driveways, your fibre installation company will need to do some work in areas shared by multiple residents. That means they will need to notify your neighbours before getting started, in some cases, you may need their consent before installation can start.

Types of Consent required:

Right of way (ROW) or shared driveway

Everyone who lives down the right of way or shares the driveway will be required to provide consent for Fibre installation.

Chorus will need to do work in shared areas so you and your neighbours can connect to fibre. When you place your order with your chosen broadband provider, your fibre installation company will visit your property to determine how much work needs to be done and provide all the affected properties with an information pack to give them notice. This will tell you which category the work is classed to and provide more details on the work to be done. There are 3 categories of work depending on the impact on shared areas.

Category 1 installation - minimal lasting effect on your shared drive area. No consent needed, your neighbours will receive at least 5-days notice before your local fibre company will start the work

Category 2 installation - may have some physical effect on shared driveway. In this case, all affected parties will have 15 working days to raise an objection. If none objects then work will start as scheduled.

Category 3 installation - may have a greater impact on a shared area of your property. It means you have to get consent from all affected parties before work can be started. As soon as all consent will be granted, you'll be notified about the start date.

Multi-dwelling unit (MDU)

If you live in an apartment or flat, the owner of the building has to provide consent. Body corporates can give consent on behalf of the tenants.  If you like in a multi-storey building, the owner of the building must provide consent.
