Hawaiki Transpacific internet cable is open – bringing better, faster internet to NZ

Hawaiki Transpacific internet cable is open – bringing better, faster internet to NZ
Thursday, 19 July 2018

A new transpacific internet cable opens today, representing a major step forward for digital communications in New Zealand and the surrounding region. The $445m Hawaiki internet cable will carry internet to and from Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific and United States.

The new cable is capable of delivering 43 terabits of additional capacity – several times the current levels of Australia and New Zealand combined.

This independent carrier-neutral system has the potential to reshape communications in the Pacific. The 15,000km fibre optic cable will future proof New Zealand internet capacity for the next 25 years. It is the first high speed connection for New Zealand that is not partially owned by Spark.

It represents a new dawn for digital communications in the region – offering greater connectivity, diversity and price competition in the market. Exactly what Broadband Compare loves – lots and lots of beautiful internet at more competitive prices!

Hawaiki Chief Executive Officer, Remi Galasso, says “Hawaiki is the fastest and largest cross-sectional capacity link between the U.S. and Australia and New Zealand. It will significantly enhance our connectivity to the rest of the world and, ultimately, improve the everyday life of our communities.”

The new system will provide more security to the market through the availability of new and diverse paths, meaning providers won’t need to rely only on Southern Cross’ single fibre cable to the US and the two existing cables to Australia. Internet providers will be able to build fully-redundant networks, including multiple routes, as well as an array of always-on services.

This means a better, faster internet service with fewer bottle-necks particularly when streaming from overseas. Customers won’t be as significantly affected by interruptions, such as the cut cable in Sydney in March that interrupted internet service for 196,000 New Zealand customers.

Vodafone’s Chief Executive Russell Stanners said, “We wish to congratulate the team at Hawaiki for their immense effort and persistence in getting to this stage. As an anchor tenant of the Hawaiki cable system, Vodafone can now offer our customers triversity across the international cable systems that connect New Zealand to the world. In addition to greater levels of resiliency, the Hawaiki cable system brings greater competition to the New Zealand market, meaning we now have more choice and flexibility when it comes to designing connectivity solutions that meet the diverse needs of New Zealand consumers and businesses alike.”
