Reliable internet is so important to our day-to-day life. Here is a simple tip to improve your Wi-Fi signal today and make sure you get the strongest signal.

Try moving your Wi-Fi router!  It’s a simple thing you can do today to get the best coverage in your house.  Just make sure it is in a central spot and up high and see how the signal changes.

1. Move your Wi-Fi router to a central spot: place it in a central spot in your house and in a central spot in the room.

Unsurprisingly Wifi routers don’t get a lot of love when you are planning the layout of your home.  They often end up tucked in a corner, in the back of a room, or hidden under a desk or piece of furniture.  But hiding the modem away can stop it from doing its job.  Solid doors and walls can absorb and degrade the strength of your signal. Try moving your router to a spot in clear view in a centrally located room, or the room where you connect most often.

2. Place the router out in the open as high up in the room as you can.

Wi-Fi signals from a router tend to spread out and downward, so the best spot for your router is high up. The higher position will allow the router signal to spread through your home with fewer objects to impede it. If you live in a two or three story home, the second floor is often the perfect spot. Experiment with moving your router to a higher spot and see how the signal changes.

When moving your Wi-Fi router keep in mind that these things around the home effect your signal:

  • - Walls (concrete & brick) can block your Wifi signal
  • - Metal also hinders Wi-Fi signal, so refrigerators, steel desks or shelves, and other large metal objects can impact your Wi-Fi signal.
  • - Water also effects Wi-Fi signal so water cyclinders or fish tanks can also affect your Wi-Fi signal
  • - Glass doesn’t really block Wi-Fi signal, but this also means large windows can let the signal straight out of your house
